{"id":487,"date":"2017-09-21T00:39:46","date_gmt":"2017-09-21T00:39:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.realworldconsulting.kiwi\/rwc\/?p=487"},"modified":"2018-05-30T19:35:03","modified_gmt":"2018-05-30T19:35:03","slug":"the-difference-between-being-effective-and-being-efficient","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.realworldconsulting.kiwi\/rwc\/rwc-blog\/the-difference-between-being-effective-and-being-efficient\/","title":{"rendered":"The Difference Between Being &#8220;Effective&#8221; and Being &#8220;Efficient&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">I work alongside a clever, bright and positive lecturer to deliver an &#8216;Operations Management&#8217; course to both Gisborne and Hawkes Bay EIT tertiary students.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Yesterday we we&#8217;re concentrating on the topic of measuring &#8220;efficiency&#8221; when my colleague offered this wisdom during the lecture&#8230;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">&#8220;<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Effectiveness<\/span>&#8221; is doing the right thing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">&#8220;<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Efficiency<\/span>&#8221; is doing the thing right.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">A differentiation which can be expanded in meaning to understand that it is possible for someone to be highly efficient yet not very effective. This can happen when someone is efficient at performing the wrong thing\/ task\/ activity\/ methodology. \u00a0\ud83d\ude42\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Putting this understanding into a business context, as managers we need to be concentrating on building-up the capability of other people (e.g. those who report to us) so that they have the best possible chance of being as <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">efficient<\/span> as possible being as <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">effective<\/span> as possible in relation to the function that they perform.
